How To Use Gutter Calculator

The most critical step to take when estimating the cost of new gutters, is to properly measure your home / roof.

Gutters are installed on roof eaves (to catch the water run-off). Therefore you need to have an accurate measurement of your roof eaves (lowest horizontal edge of the roof).

Most homes will have a gable roof (cape, colonial, etc.), and thus have 2 eaves, which are typically the same length. Measure the length of your eave and multiply the number by 2. If you have a hip roof (pyramid style), you will need gutters on each side of the roof. In this case measure the total length of your roof eaves.

Often, roof extends beyond the walls of the house, and this overhang may increase the length of gutters, so take that into account, when measuring.

As for drains / downspouts, most homes will have four drains – one on each corner. Therefore, for a single storey home, you will need about 40 ln. ft. of drain pipe. For two storey homes, the number will be double, and so on.

Average Gutter Installation Cost

New seamless gutters are fairly inexpensive to install – average home’s new gutters cost between $950 to $1290, and take just one day to replace/install.

For 2-storey homes, you would need to add about 4 ten-foot sections of downspout, which only adds about $50-75 in material cost, but increases job complexity, so you would end up paying about $150-200 more.

Cost of Gutters Per Liner Foot

Unlike siding or roofing, which are measured in square feet, gutters are measured in Linear Feet or total length of installed gutter.

Then, the number of drain pipes (downspouts), corners, gutter guards and other options are factored in. Usually 4 downspouts (one on each corner) are included with every job, and if you have a house with may cut-up geometry, more downspouts and corners are added in.

The average cost of new 5″ seamless aluminum gutters (most common in US) for 1 foot installed length is between $11-13 per foot.

Thus a common cape home with 45 feet front and rear length, and total 90 ln. ft. of gutters would cost about $990 to $1,170 (US Average), before adding gutter guards.

Adding gutter guards would increase the cost by $5-15 per linear foot, depending on type of gutter guards.

Prices for new gutters vary from state to state and from region to region, and can also fluctuate with the cost of aluminum.

How Are Seamless Gutters Installed

SeamLESS gutters in their name imply that there are no seams. If you need a 50 ft’ run of gutter on one side of the house, it will be one piece, with end caps on each end, and two or more drain pipes.

But how does your contractor deliver a 50 foot long gutter. Answer is – they don’t. Seamless gutters are made to order, on site.

A truck with a roll-forming machine, and a much of gutter coils in different colors, will come to your location and make a gutter of needed length. The contractor will then install the hangers, end caps and drain outlets on the ground, and will hang the gutter as one single piece.

Many gutter installers have their own trucks with roll forming machines, thus they have a flexibility to work around your schedule. Whenever is a good time to install, they will come out, make the gutters, and install it in 3-4 hours, as well as remove old gutters if needed.

What About Copper / Zinc / Steel Gutters?

Unlike seamless aluminum gutters, all other metals (with rare exception for copper) are not SEAMLESS. They come in 10 ft. sections, and will have seams.

Fortunately the modern gutter seal caulk is so good, that you won’t have leaks for at least 10-15 years, and sometimes longer. However, eventually those seams will start to leak and will need re-sealing.

As for seamless copper gutters – they exist, but are rare. Since copper gutters are very expensive – most contractors do not carry copper coil. Thus finding a gutter installer who does seamless copper gutters can be a challenge.

How Much Do Copper & Zinc Gutters Cost?

Both copper and zinc are premium metals and will cost significantly more than seamless aluminum gutters.

While one foot of aluminum gutters costs between $11-13, Zinc and Copper will cost at least $27-33+ per foot. Also add to that decorative hangers, and much more expensive downspout pipes, corners, etc., you may end up paying upward of $40 per foot total.

Due to the much higher costs, zinc and copper gutters are usually installed on high end homes in affluent neighborhoods.

Real life anecdote My former tenant worked for a contractor doing work in Boston on a new construction housing. They installed about 2500 ln. ft. of copper gutters on a new 3-storey apartment complex in Roxbury (a Boston neighborhood).

The next morning when they came out to finish the job, all the gutters were gone. A crew of thieves come out at night (with their own ladders) and stole nearly $70,000 worth of new copper gutters, and most likely scrapped it for mere $5000-7000. The company then installed seamless aluminum instead.

Bottom line – copper and zinc gutters are usually used on custom homes, and cost a lot more than aluminum.

Gutters From Big Box stores (Home Depot, Lowe’s, Menards, Costco, etc)

Home Depot, Lowe’s and Menards sell gutters in 10 foot sections, as well as all needed accessories. However, they do not sell seamless gutters in the store.

If you want seamless from a Big Box store, you can have them install it, since all the big box stores offer installation services through their sub-contractors.

However, because these big box stores also need to make a profit on each job, you will typically end up paying double the market rate, and get the same product and same quality as if you hired a regular gutter installer. You would be paying 100% more for a “brand name” and questionable warranty.

We say questionable, because typically gutter installers are very straight forward and should be leak-free for 20+ years. It is really difficult botch up a gutter installation – although you can find extra-ordinary hacks who can do it 🙂 …

As for Costco, they work with companies like Gutter Helmet, but the prices are really exuberant. People report quotes (and many end up paying) $70-90 or more per linear foot!

Sure you get good gutters, but you can get the same from an independent contractor for $20-25 per foot.
